There was no media coverage such as we know it today until 1980 when ESPN started broadcasting the races. Earndhardt didn't really get hard constant media until 1986 when he won his second title. At that point he was 35 years old. There is a big difference in the thought processes of a 35 year old and a 23 year old no matter what there names are. The good young drivers coming in today not only get good rides at a young age they also have to deal with the media at a young age.
