Summary:
Dale Earnhardt started the second half of the 1998 season with another mediocre
run. Earnhardt finished 18th in the Jiffy Lube 300, making it his ninth finish of
15th or worse this season. Earnhardt isn't low in the Winston Cup points because of
a few very bad finishes; Earnhardt is low in the points because he usually can't even
finish in the top-15.
On the bright side, Dale qualified 20th. A position which, for Earnhardt,
means a step in the right direction. This is the sixth time in 17 qualifying
sessions this season that Dale has made the field during first-round qualifying. He
has now qualified on the first day for each of the past four races.

Dale finished a disappointing 18th in
Loudon. Earnhardt, who finished 2nd last year in this event, fought an ill-handling
race car throughout the day.
